4A. Preliminary rule
4B. Place of publication, distribution, etc.
4C. Name of publisher, distributor, etc.
4D. Date of publication, distribution, etc.
4E. Place of manufacture
4F. Name of manufacturer
4G. Date of manufacture
Sections found in GM but not in B
Sections in neither GM nor B that should be considered for G
4A. Preliminary rule (= GM 2A)
- GM has introductory paragraphs here (GM 2A1): one for published materials, one for unpublished: want to keep this summary/intro.
- Should G deal with unpublished first?
- GM says "For unpublished material, this area consists only of the date element" but this is where a "place of creation" in the CCO sense should go. (NB. MARC21 for the 260 says "For unpublished items...this field may not be included in a record or may contain only subfield $c." Does "may not" mean "might not" or "must not"?)
4A1. Prescribed punctuation (= GM 2A2)
Differences (emphasis added):
- GM has "Precede a second and any subsequently named place of publication by a semicolon ( ; ), eliminating any linking word or phrase given in the source" where B has "Precede a second or subsequently named place of publication, distribution, etc., by a semicolon, unless a linking word or phrase is given in the publication."
- GM has "printing or manufacture" where B has just "manufacture"
- GM has "If the publication, distribution, etc., area precedes a new paragraph, end it with a mark of final punctuation, i.e., a period, closing parenthesis, closing bracket, or question mark."
Irrelevant difference:
- GM has "Enclose a supplied statement of function in square brackets" but this can be dropped: function is better filled by relator terms and notes.
4A2. Sources of information (= GM 2A3)
- GM only addresses prescribed order (and transposing data); B also names prescribed sources, and says to make a note indicating source if information taken from colophon, other preliminaries, or dust jacket instead of title page
- When would a note on the source be needed for pictures? Graphics don't have a normative source the way books have title pages.
4A3. Form and order of information (= GM 2A3; GM 2C7)
- B requires a note "indicating the original position of the transposed elements"; consider making note optional in G because there is no standard order.
4A4. Fictitious or incorrect information
- Not in GM, but should be in G (GM only deals with fictitious or incorrect information in each element individually, not for cases where everything is fictitious or incorrect).
4A5. Information covered by labels, etc.
- not in GM, but could conceivably happen; is "label" really the right word? Goal is presumably to re-assure catalogers that there's no need to pick apart the item to get at hidden information. Why isn't a note mentioning that the information comes from the label required?
4A6. Elements relating to publication, distribution, etc., vs. elements relating to manufacture
Need to "translate" footnote 14 on the role of publishers, printers, and booksellers to apply to pictures, and move it to the body of the text, since the issue isn't as clear-cut with pictures. Conversely, there's less need to reassure picture catalogers that they need to consider "wording, layout, and typography" because that's normal in picture cataloging.
4A6.1. Statements relating to publication, distribution, etc., only
Taken as understood in GM.
4A6.2. Statements relating to manufacture only (= GM 2B1)
Same, except B explicitly addresses known publishers unnamed on material where the manufacturer is named.
4A6.3. Statements relating both to publication, distribution, etc., and to manufacture (= GM 2B2)
Same, but in B is expanded much more than necessary for G
- B 4A6.3 and its subdivisions expands more than necessary for G
4B. Place of publication, distribution, etc. (= GM 2C)
4B1. General rule (=GM 2C1)
- GM doesn't have the general statement B has in 4B1.1 but it will work, if change "booksellers" to "printsellers"
4B2. Places of publication, distribution, etc., with initial prepositions, etc. (= GM 2C1)
- GM includes this in in the first section, but making it a new paragraph makes sense.
4B3. Supplied modern forms of place names (= GM 2C2)
Both say to supply modern form, but different wording, emphasis added:
- GM says "use the current, well-established English form of the name, if there is one"
- B says "use an English form of the name, if there is one"
Switching to B's wording for G won't be a problem.
4B4. Supplied fuller forms of place names (= GM 2C4)
Same.
4B5. Supplied larger jurisdictions (= GM 2C3)
Same except for non-problematic wording difference about modern form already noted.
4B6. Two or more places of publication, distribution, etc. (= GM 2C5)
- Reduce detail and significance because rare in picture cataloging
- Option to omit "all places after the third" better as "all places after the first" for pictures? Published stereographs would be the case study.
4B7. Places of publication, distribution, etc., in multipart monographs (= GM 2C6)
Same, except that "multipart monographs" needs to be translated to pictures
4B8. Place names that are grammatically inseparable parts of other areas, etc. (= GM 2C7)
Same except for non-problematic wording difference about modern form already noted.
4B9. Fictitious or incorrect places of publication, distribution, etc. (= GM 2C8)
Same except for non-problematic wording difference about modern form already noted.
4B10. No place of publication, distribution, etc. (= GM 2C10.3)
Same except for non-problematic wording difference about modern form already noted.
4B11. Place of publication, distribution, etc., supplied based on address or sign (= GM 2C9)
Same except for non-problematic wording difference about modern form already noted.
4B12. Place of publication, distribution, etc., uncertain or unknown
4B12.1. If the place of publication, distribution, etc., is uncertain... (= GM 2C10.1)
Same except for non-problematic wording difference about modern form already noted.
4B12.2. If no city of publication, distribution, etc., can be conjectured... (= GM 2C10.2)
Same except for non-problematic wording difference about modern form already noted.
4B12.3. If the reason for supplying the place is not apparent from the rest of the description... (= GM 2C10.3)
Same.
4B12.4. If no place of publication, distribution, etc., can be supplied, use the abbreviation “s.l.” (sine loco) in square brackets. (= GM 2C12)
- GM adds "Capitalize only the "s" of "s.l."
- Need to emphasize that this is a last resort; should use 4B12.2 unless you can't get any narrower than Planet Earth.
4B13. Place names in more than one language or script
4B13.1. If the name of the place of publication, distribution, etc., appears in more than one language or script... (= GM 2C11)
- B requires transcribing the remaining statements as parallel statements, unless there are too many (see option, below).
- GM says "give the parallel statement in a note, if desirable."
4B13.2. Optionally, if it is considered that the parallel statements are too numerous to list exhaustively... (= GM 2C11)
...and that some may be omitted without significant loss of identification, omit parallel statements after the first using the mark of omission. Transcribe the omitted statement(s) in a note, if considered important.
- GM has this as the rule when there's more than one place, without using the mark of omission.
4C. Name of publisher, distributor, etc. (= GM 2D)
4C1. Transcribe the names of publishers, distributors, and booksellers as part of this element...
Not explicitly stated in GM, but okay with vocabulary translations (e.g., use "printseller" instead of "bookseller").
4C2. Transcribe the name of the publisher, together with any preceding words or phrases, as it appears in the publication... (= GM 2D1; GM 2D3)
- Same, except that GM says "associated words and phrases" not "preceding words or phrases": is a mis-wording in B, confirmed through query to DCRM-L 2008.02.22. New wording to be used for S: Transcribe the name of the publisher, together with any associated words or phrases, as it appears in the serial.
- GM makes the option to omit a separate numbered section (not clear why it isn't in B, since B numbers them immediately above, in 4B13).
- GM has no equivalent to "If a statement such as “Privately printed” appears on the title page, transcribe it as, or as part of, the publisher, distributor, etc., statement." Rarely or never happens with graphics, so should probably drop it.
4C3. Publisher, distributor, etc., statements containing grammatically inseparable place names or dates (= GM 2D4)
Same, though worded differently.
4C4. Publisher, distributor, etc., statements containing only addresses, signs, or initials
4C4.1. If only the address, sign, or initials of the publisher, distributor, etc., appear... (= GM 2D6)
Mostly the same, but B includes instructions for dealing with initials, and gives the option of including the name, if known, in a note instead of square brackets in the publisher statement.
4C4.2. If the identification of the publisher, distributor, etc., is based on a device... (= GM 2D7)
Same, though worded differently.
4C5. Fictitious or incorrect publisher, distributor, etc., statements
Surprisingly, not in GM, which only covers fictitious or incorrect places and dates. Should be in G.
4C6. Two or more names of publishers, distributors, etc. (= GM 2D2)
4C6.1. If the publisher, distributor, etc., statement includes more than one publisher, distributor, etc.,...
Same, except that B says this only applies if the statement with two or more names is "in a single source."
4C6.2. Optionally, if it is considered that the names are too numerous to list exhaustively...
Implicit in GM, which simply says "generally record them all..."
4C6.3. If the name of a publisher, distributor, etc., associated with an earlier edition appears together with the name of the actual publisher, distributor, etc., of the edition being described...
Never or almost never happens with graphic materials. Omit, as was done for S.
4C6.4. If both the place and publisher, distributor, etc., associated with an earlier edition appear together with the place and publisher, distributor, etc., of the edition being described...
Never or almost never happens with graphic materials. Omit, as was done for S.
4C7. Names of publishers, distributors, etc., in multipart monographs (= GM 2D5)
Same, except that "multipart monographs" isn't the operative term. GM says "a collection of published items having a series title" but want to avoid using "collection" in this context.
4C8. Supplied and conjectured names of publishers, distributors, etc. (= GM 2D8)
Same, except that giving supporting evidence in a note is optional in GM. G should follow B in making it required.
4C9. No supplied name of publisher, distributor, etc. (= GM 2D9)
- Same, except GM includes "Do not capitalize the 's' of 's.n.'"
- Consider making optional for G, in parallel with always providing at least a guess at a place instead of "S.l.": the audience for rare graphic materials cataloging includes many more non-specialists than rare books cataloging, and including Latin abbreviations from the bibliographic world is a hinderance.
4C10. Publisher, distributor, etc., transcribed as part of another area
Not in GM, but okay.
4C11. Publisher, distributor, etc., statements in more than one language or script (= GM 2D10)
Different:
- B says transcribe them all, or optionally omit after the first with a mark of omission and transcribed in a note if considered important.
- GM says only use one, with others in a note if desireable. Mark of omission not explicitly forbidden, but not included.
4D. Date of publication, distribution, etc. (= GM 2F)
4D1. General rule
4D1.1. Transcribe dates of publication, distribution, etc., as part of this element...
Not stated in GM, but okay to include.
4D1.2. Transcribe dates as they appear in the publication, including the day and month, if present. (= GM 2F1)
Different: including the day and month, if present, is optional in GM but required in B.
4D1.3. Transcribe words and phrases such as “in the year” and “anno” as part of this element... (= GM 2F1)
Different: GM says to omit, without using the mark of omission, or optionally transcribe. G should follow B (or at least, should not allow it to be omitted without a mark of omission).
4D1.4. If the date is grammatically inseparable from information transcribed as part of another element or area... (= GM 2F2)
Same.
4D2. Transcription involving adjustments or additions
4D2.1. Roman numerals... (= GM 2F1)
Different:
- GM says convert to arabic, optionally keep roman with arabic in square brackets
- B says keep roman, and supply arabic in square brackets: G should follow B.
4D2.2. Chronograms.
Not in GM. Do these ever occur in graphic materials?
4D2.3. Very long dates. (= GM 2F1)
Same, except that it appears as an option within an option in GM.
4D2.4. Fictitious or incorrect dates. (= GM 2F3)
Same.
4D2.5. Julian/Old Style dates.
Not in GM, but should be in G.
4D2.6. Dates not of the Julian or Gregorian calendar.
Not in GM, but should be in G.
4D2.7. Multiple adjustments or additions.
Not in GM, but should be in G.
4D3. Date of publication, distribution, etc., supplied from reference sources
Not explicitly addressed in GM, since reference sources can be used as the chief source of information. B's wording is appropriate for G because would want dates not inscribed on the item to be in square brackets, and would want source of the date stated in a note.
4D4. Conjectural date of publication, distribution, etc.
4D4.1. Supply in square brackets a conjectural date... (= GM 2F5.1)
Same.
4D4.2. If the title page bears a prominent date that does not clearly represent the date of publication, either transcribe it as part of the title and statement of responsibility area or give it in a note.
Not necessary as a separate point in G; would be understood as covered by 4D4.1 because title pages aren't the expected source.
4D5. Patterns for supplying a conjectural date (= GM Appendix A)
Same, except for:
- B incl. probable approximate date, [ca. 1580?]
- terminal date examples have different order:
- GM: year month day
- B: day month year
- B incl. span uncertain, [between 1711 and 1749?]
- GM incl. "n.d." as a last resort: okay to drop, but add GM's assurance that an estimate of several centuries is okay.
4D6. Copyright dates and dates of deposit (= GM 2F4)
Substantially different: graphic materials cataloging routinely includes copyright date when known because users are routinely interested in reproducing the image, not just studying it or quoting from it as with verbal material.
4D7. Date of publication, distribution, etc., in multipart monographs (= GM 2F6)
Same, except that B's wording on when to include a note is preferable. Again, need to be careful when translating "multipart monographs" into graphic materials terms because GM's use of "collection" is potentially confusing.
4D8. Date of publication, distribution, etc., on part pages
Not in GM. Might be included in 4D7 depending on the wording chosen to represent "multipart monograph" as a grapic materials term.
4E. Place of manufacture (= GM 2G)Place, name, and date for "manufacturer or printer" are combined into one paragraph of instructions in GM, but principles are the same.
4F. Name of manufacturer (= GM 2G)
Place, name, and date for "manufacturer or printer" are combined into one paragraph of instructions in GM, but principles are the same
4G. Date of manufacture (= GM 2G)
Place, name, and date for "manufacturer or printer" are combined into one paragraph of instructions in GM, but principles are the same
Sections found in GM, but not in B:
GM 2B3 Sponsor-advertiser
Needs to be included in G. Fits in as another subdividion of B 4A6, with reference to ch. 1 on statement of responsibility.
GM 2E. Statement of function of publisher, distributor, etc. (optional addition)
Drop from G, since institutions wanting to include this information can now use relator terms.
GM 2H. Date of execution of unpublished material
Needs to be included in G, perhaps coming before published material.
Sections in neither GM nor B that should be considered for G:
Place of creation of unpublished material
See CCO, for example.

When it becomes time for the Graphics group to work on Area 4D for dates you may want to have a look as to what the MSS section has decided to do with dates as the two types of materials will have similar circumstances. You will find this in Area 1 in the last section (what ever letter it may end up being as of Jan 2009 it is L), as well as a sidebar section on dates. Take note: I am not suggesting that dates are moved to Area 1 for Graphics as it has not been policy for dates to go with titles as it has for Manuscripts and Archives. -Alison Bridger, Folger Shakespeare Library, DCRM(MSS)
