Summary of Virtual Meeting, August 25, 2011

Present: Ellen, Erin, Lenore

Since there were only three of us (and only two at first) we just informally discussed how DCRM(G) would deal with the physical description of an album Lenore is cataloging. It consists of about 101 pictures, 2 of which are watercolors, the are rest albumen photographs, nine of which are hand-colored.

Lenore’s current version:

245   [Views of cathedrals, monuments and city scenes in Europe, 1880-1900] ‡h [graphic].
260  [between 1880 and 1900?]
300 ca. 101 pictures (99 photographs and 2 watercolors) in 1 album : ‡b albumen prints, 9
handcolored  ; ‡c album  26 x  37 cm.
500  Title devised by cataloger.
500  Album bound with white gilt cover entitled "Souvenirs".
520 Album contains 8 x 10 or larger albumen prints, and hand-colored photographs, by various artists, in both portrait and landscape format together with 2 watercolor drawings. Subjects are chiefly cathedrals, buildings and monuments in major European cities, including Paris, Venice, Milan, Florence, Urbino, Naples, Malta, with views of art works in the Vatican Museum, several views of Mount Vesuvius, urban views, and genre scenes of peasants.

If considered to be a Multipart Resource (which we agreed it wouldn’t be, since the creator or creating body of the graphic material didn’t conceive of it as a whole), possibilities for the 300 might include:

ca. 101 pictures (99 photographs and 2 watercolors) in 1 album : albumen prints, 9  handcolored  ; album  26 x  37 cm.

ca. 99 photographs and 2 watercolor drawings in 1 album : chiefly albumen prints (9 hand-colored) ; album 26 x 37 cm.

ca. 101 pictures in 1 album : chiefly albumen photographic prints (9 hand-colored), 2 watercolor drawings ; album 26 x 37 cm.

If considered to be a Collection (which we agreed it should be, since it was made-up from graphic materials that weren’t created to be part of this album) possibilities for the 300 might include:

1 album (ca. 99 photographs, 2 watercolor drawings) : chiefly albumen prints (9 hand-colored) ; album 26 x 37 cm.

1 album (ca. 99 photographs, 2 drawings) : chiefly albumen prints (9 hand-colored), watercolors ; album 26 x 37 cm.

Agreed the last one, highlighted in yellow, seemed to fit the rules best, and be understandable.

Discussed the fact that rules for multipart resources (i.e. creator-intended "sets" of pictures) call for an item count followed by the as-issued container, if known (e.g. "10 prints in 1 portfolio") while rules for collections say the 300 can count items, items within containers, containers only, folders only, etc. (e.g. "1 album (352 prints)”)

  • felt it was okay to differ because it’s the norm to state collections in terms of containers, not items
  • added placeholder note to 5D4 (measurements of multipart resources) saying "need to allow for measuring container, when issued in container; and for measuring items when not"
