Annual 2010 Notes

Page history last edited by eblakedc@... 1 year, 2 months ago

Misc. notes from Annual ALA meeting, June 2010, Washington, DC

  • Will post next draft in a digress.it blog, so that it’s possible to comment on individual rules where everyone can see them (as opposed to sending comments by e-mail, where they have to be compiled into rule order, and people commenting don’t know what’s already been noted by someone else)

Supplied Other title information:

  • okay to experiment with, but we don’t have as good a reason as Cartographic does for wanting it
  • is a display issue (for seeing one line in the OPAC)
  • goal is to make title recognizable, NOT to make it distinctive (i.e. a title might give words that are complemented by the visually-represented named entity (so need to verbally represent the named entity for the title to make sense without seeing the image)
  • don’t want to get into general descriptions, want to follow principle of Cartographic that it’s a specific kind of information that gets supplied (i.e., use for supplying NAMES of named entities such as building, literary work, person, war, battle
  • Ditto for supplied whole/part: expand 1B8. to include supplied
  • Never mix supplied and transcribed in same sub-element.

Dedication: per BSC discussion of Cartographic Materials

  • add as option, making it 1D4.
  • Question: what did we mean by “statements of patronage” in 1A2.4? Does that mean dedications? Wondering if there needs to be an “Optionally, transcribe dedications as Other title information, see 1D4.”

RDA

  • will be boxed options throughout, plus  Appendix for Content Type, Media Type, Carrier Type
  • index will group all RDA options (so list within body or appendix isn’t needed)
  • For rare materials reasons: keeping sic and i.e., NOT offering RDA equivalent; need footnote to make it clear we’re doing this on purpose (i.e. differing from RDA): add to wiki of G changes that others could use
  • because undated graphic materials come up so often, will require use of RDA pattern for uncertain dates (since AACR2 pattern of “17--“ is only an example, not a requirement, and can be difficult for users to interpret)

Physical description

  • agreed that sheet measurement should be in 300 no matter what, like the height of book; i.e. even though it’s local info, it’s important (for research, for security)
  • for intaglio prints, give platemark AND sheet

Appendix H: Material with title page

  • greatly shortened Appendix F (Material with title pages): now it only gives instructions when they differ from the body of the text.
  • Examples gathered for now-deleted parts of App. F can be spread around the main body as needed.
