Area 1 (Title and Statement of Responsibility)

  • 1B2: I  see that numerous reviewers (Dec. 2009) have concerns with the rules to "Always make a note on the source of the title proper."  I still favor this requirement. Even for printed/published images, the location and form of transcribed text varies, so the difference between published/unpublished or print/manuscript text is not the only consideration necessary to determine whether a note could be optional. Perhaps examples more specific than "Title from item." would help.  "Title from text within image"; "Title from caption printed below image"; Title from printed lable on verso of mount"; etc.? Area 5 (Physical Description)

  • 5B4.1 : After reading reviewers' comments, I see we need to resolve some confusion around "containers" or "carriers".  I'm not sure we should strike obvious "carriers" like CD-ROM and DVD from our list, as has been suggested. That would then leave the question of defining albums and sketchbooks.  Broadening the rule to encompass "containers or carriers" might be better. Furthermore, if we do eliminate terms like CD-ROM, album, or DVD, where in the Physical Description do we record such information?  (At lease one reviewer voiced a strong preference for the old GIHC approach of having such terms included as SMD terms, but I don't think I want to re-hash that discussion.)  [JAE 2010-01-05]
  • 5D2  : Format.  Raised numerous questions with December reviewers. I suggest limiting use of this Format area to instances where format is closely analogous to size, just as it is in the book world. I think language in an earlier version attempted this -- but perhaps was confusing. (Format in photography is particularly suitable: quarter plate, 35 mm, 8 x 10, etc., but terms like "postcard" or "poster" don't fit as comfortably.) [JAE 2010-01-05]
