Version 4 notes and queries

Page history last edited by Erin Blake 2 wks ago

Editors: edit this page as needed to add outstanding issues, questions about one area that arise while working on another, etc. so we can keep track of what still needs to be discussed. It's anticipated that things noted here but not resolved will be topics for a conference call

General issues

  •

Area 0 (General Rules)

  •

Area 1 (Title and Statement of Responsibility)

  •

Area 2 (State/Edition)

  •

Area 4 (Publication, Distribution, Etc.)

  •

Area 5 (Physical Description)

  •   5C : Consider more specificity in order of info provided under Other Physical Details.  If simply left open to cataloger's judgement, with no further guidance, consider adapting and moving sentence from 5C5.1 up to 5C1 (General Rule), along the lines of: "Terms for medium, color, technique, process, format, and support may be freely combined with the use of commas, conjunctions and prepositions as necessary." [JAE 2009-10-01]
  • 5D1.7 : measurements of digital files (file size). I think we should favor capitalization in abbreviations: MB, KB. There is a useful explanation of standards in play here:  http://www.atvci.net/bitsandbytes.html .  And it seems to be accepted that a lower-case b = bits, not bytes, and is generally used in terms of speed of data transfer. (Kb = Kbps =  thousand bits per second). (Shamefully, I have not double checked AACR2 Chapter 9 to confirm agreement. -JAE 2009-11-16)
    • agree: we should use KB and MB, per Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (the DCRM standard), since neither AACR2 nor ISBD Consolidated is prescriptive about it (AACR2 Chapter 9 uses "mb" in examples and ISBD Consolidated uses "MB").

Area 6 (Series)

  •

Area 7 (Note)

  • Much work/discussion needed on Notes relating to the Edition Area (state, as we've narrowly defined it). I began to try out Erin's suggestion of collapsing frodm 7B7 and 7B8 (Edition & Printing History + Publication notes) because I do think we should de-emphasize the rare instances of "state" being applicable to most graphic materials. But it's a mess. [JAE 2009-10-03]
  • No section on Subject notes was present in the most recent draft, so I pulled in GM 5B14 and modified it somewhat as the new 7B12. I considered making it part of "Contents" (7B16, now 7B15), to de-emphasize the rare instances of formal contents being relevant -- but stopped short of doing so. [JAE 2009-10-03]

Area 8 (Standard Number and Terms of Availability)

  • Can we delete "8B3. Fingerprints" on the theory that anyone adding fingerprints for books from the handpress era would be cataloging those books as books, not graphic materials? [EB 2009.09.13]
