This page is for collecting examples

...but it has outgrown itself. See also the "Examples" folder.

Abbreviated names 0G8.1

  1. TITLE:  Friedr. Hecker's Abschied in Strasburg ...  View image at http://asweb.artsci.uc.edu/german/172/hecker1.jpg

Archaic spelling

  1. TITLE:  Doctor Syntax, in the middle of a smoaking hot political squabble, wishes to whet his whistle / Rowlandson del. Go to example.

Latin abbreviation expanded in title

  1. Illustris domina d[om]na Maria Stuart, Comitissa Portlandiae, Neylandiae, etc. [graphic] / Ant: Van Dycke pinxit, W: Hollar fecit. (actually depicts Frances Stuart, countess of Portland, not Mary, so should presumably have [i.e. Frances] after "Maria" but putting the English form "Frances" into a Latin sentence seems wrong). Same stereograph photograph, different titles and imprints:

Parallel information in Japanese and English

Appears to have the same title and imprint information in Japanese and English (need someone who reads Japanese to verify). Also forms part of a set ("The Illustration of the Siberian War, no. 2"). Source: Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division. View record.

Qualifications in a statement of responsibility

Example of a qualification worth keeping and one worth omitting on the same piece: Painted by H. Fuseli, R.A. ; Engraved by R. Thew, Hist. engraver to H.R.H. the P. of Wales [would keep "R.A." and drop "Hist. engraver to H.R.H. the P. of Wales]. Example is from Folger ART Flat b1-2 copy 1, vol. 2.

Title proper partially obscured for for comic effect

Etched caricature caption reads: The monster broke loose, or--a peep into the Shakespeare-Gallery

Transcribe the whole thing, with a note explaining that "The monster broke loose, or" is crossed out for comic effect? Example is Gillray's satire on the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery. This is different from information incompletely erased from earlier states.  View image.
