BIBCO Standard Record for DCRM(G) material

Background

The AACR2 version of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s standards for a “floor record” provided separate standards for regular books and for rare books, but only one standard for graphic materials (a standard intended for general collection material cataloged according to AACR2). The RDA version has a separate standard for rare materials, not just books. This standard is intended to accommodate all material cataloged using DCRM descriptive rules. 

At the time the BSR for Rare Material was approved, only DCRM(B) and DCRM(S) had been published, and only DCRM(B) was relevant to the BSR (serials catalogers making PCC records follow CONSER standards). Because DCRM(G) had not yet been published, it was not possible to include graphics instructions. As a result, when the current BSR Metadata Application Profile says "rare materials" it really means "rare books." For example, the BSR says "For rare materials, adding genre/form terms from one of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) Controlled Vocabularies is strongly recommended" but this would not apply to graphic materials. Similarly, a note on transposition is mandatory "for rare materials if a title and statement of responsibility as recorded have been transposed from their presentation in the source." This probably only applies to books (haven't checked the latest drafts for maps and music).

Work needed

Draft a BSR that takes DCRM(G) into account and get it approved by the RBMS Bib Standards Committee and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. This will allow records to be coded both "rda" and "dcrmg" while an RDA-based DCRM is being developed.
